Income over feed cost report

What this page helps you do

Open Operations → Reports → Browse all reports → Income over feed cost to compare the value of recorded milk against recorded feeding cost. This is a dairy management indicator, IOFC, not confirmed buyer revenue or a full farm profit statement. It leaves out health, breeding, labour and other costs. The report needs usable Feed data; if it is absent, a high apparent margin can be misleading.

Set the Window controls

Control	What it changes
From	First farm-local day to include. The initial value is approximately six calendar months before today.
To	Final farm-local day to include. It initially equals today. To must be on or after From; the backend limits a requested window to five years.
Group periods by	Choose Week, Month or Quarter. A week starts on Monday. This changes period buckets, not the underlying chosen dates. The first and last buckets are clipped to the selected window when their day counts are calculated.
Milk price / litre	Uses the farm’s configured price effective on the report’s last day until you type a scenario price, in currency per litre. Enter zero or a positive value and check the value before using the result: the current control suggests a minimum of zero but does not reject a negative number typed directly. The control steps by 0.01. Your override applies to every period on this page and does not save a new milk-price setting. To change the farm configuration, open the linked Milk settings page.

If no configured price exists, the page warns you to enter one. With no price, its current calculation still displays the income side as zero and subtracts feed cost; treat those resulting margin figures as unvalued, not proof that the milk earned nothing. Clearing the price box currently changes it to an explicit zero-price scenario. A request error says the report could not load; correct the dates or retry rather than interpreting a blank graph as zero performance.

Understand the calculation

The backend groups active, non-deleted milk recordings by their recorded farm-local day. It sums the canonical milk weight in kilograms and counts distinct animals with a milk record in that period. It separately groups recorded farm feeding events by farm-local time and adds quantity × recorded cost per unit; an absent unit cost contributes zero. A period with only milk or only feed can still appear.

The screen converts recorded milk kilograms to litres using the farm’s current milk-density setting, then calculates milk income = litres × selected price per litre. Feed cost is the farm’s recorded feeding-event cost in that period; it is not restricted to just the animals counted from milk recordings. IOFC = milk income − feed cost. For each period, IOFC / cow / day = period IOFC ÷ (distinct milk-recorded cows × calendar days in the selected part of that period). This is the current report’s period approximation; it does not count the actual number of recorded cow-days. A dash means the divisor is zero, for example a feed-only period.

The one chosen price is held constant across the whole window. A change in the graph therefore does not show historical changes in buyer price. It reflects the recorded milk, feed and cow-count inputs under that one price scenario. Missing milk days, unpriced feeding events or feed used for stock/animals outside the milk-recorded cow count can distort the per-cow comparison. Read the summary, chart and table

The four cards total Milk income, Feed cost, IOFC (income − feed) and IOFC / cow / day across the returned periods. The last card divides total IOFC by the sum of each period’s cow count × selected calendar days, not by one static herd size times the whole date range. A dash appears when that sum is zero.

The IOFC per cow per day bar chart has one bar per returned period. The horizontal axis is the period start; the vertical axis is money per cow per day, with zero as a reference line. Green means non-negative; red means negative. Hover a bar to see that period’s income, feed cost, number of milk-recorded cows, day count and calculated IOFC/cow/day. The chart may have no bars when there are no qualifying milk or feeding events.

The By period table shows the same periods and adds Milk in your selected display unit, Cows, Days, Income, Feed cost, IOFC and / cow / day. Price calculations always convert to litres even if Milk is displayed in kilograms. This page currently has no CSV/PDF export or recording action. To correct a figure, check the underlying milk recording, feeding event, feed cost and configured price, then reload the report.
