Transfer animals between your farms

What this page helps you do

An internal transfer moves an animal between farms belonging to the same organisation. Use this flow to keep ownership, housing and animal identity aligned when the animal physically changes farms.

Use Transfer to another farm when the source and destination farms belong to the same Farmlync organisation. Moving to another business is a sale/purchase workflow, not this internal-transfer action.

You need permission to manage animals on both farms. Being able to see the destination in a list is not sufficient authority to transfer animals into it.

Prepare the transfer

1. Select the source farm in the farm portal.
2. Open Animal selection and select the animals that are actually moving.
3. Check the identities and remove any selection left from an earlier job.
4. Choose Transfer to farm and confirm the selection to open the transfer form.

A transfer supports up to 500 distinct animals. Every animal must still be Active and at the source farm when the transfer is saved.

Form controls

Control	What to enter
Destination farm	Required. Choose a different farm in the same organisation. The current farm is excluded from the selector.
Transfer date	Required to enable submission. Initially today in the source farm’s timezone; the date picker does not offer a future date. Enter the actual movement date.
Destination pen	Optional. Appears after choosing a destination. Select a pen from that farm, or leave No pen.
Destination groups	Optional. Select one or more of the offered destination-farm groups. Click a selected group again to remove it. The selector warns if the list is truncated.
Reason	Optional text explaining the move, for example “Moved to finishing unit”.
Transfer … animal(s)	Check the count, destination and date, then submit the transfer.
Cancel	Closes the form without transferring the animals.

Changing the destination farm clears the previously chosen destination pen and groups. Choose them again for the new destination before submitting.

What moves and what remains historical?

• The animals become members of the destination farm.
• Their source pen and source group memberships are cleared. The chosen destination pen and groups are applied instead.
• Their active lactations move with them so further milk recording can continue at the destination.
• Closed lactations and historical milk records remain associated with the source farm’s history.
• The movement records retain source, destination, date and recording-user information.

Do not recreate the animals at the destination as a shortcut: the transfer keeps their existing identities. A saved internal transfer is also not proof that an external registry has accepted a movement; check any required registry workflow separately.

Check the result

Look for the transfer confirmation, including the number of transferred animals and any active lactations moved. Refresh the source list and then switch to the destination farm. Check the animals, pen/group placement and active lactations there.

If the transfer is rejected

Message or situation	What to check
Access denied	An administrator must check your animal-management permission on both farms.
Source and destination must differ	Select another farm. Use a pen move for changes within the same farm.
Cross-organisation transfer	Use the sale/purchase workflow rather than trying another organisation’s identifier.
Animal is no longer at the source / no longer Active	Refresh and inspect its current farm and status before rebuilding the selection.
Animal changed after selection	Another change made the selected version stale. Reload, review the latest record and select it again.
Destination identifier conflict	An animal at the destination already uses a farm-unique identifier held by an incoming animal. Resolve the real identification conflict before retrying; do not invent a national identity.
Destination pen or group no longer exists	Reopen the destination choices and select a current pen/group.

Example

To move ten heifers from the home farm to another farm in your business, start at the home farm, select those ten and choose Transfer to farm. Select the destination, actual date and destination heifer pen/group. Save once and verify the ten animals at the destination. If the animals are instead being sold to another business, stop here and use the sale workflow.
