Cull candidate list report

What this page helps you do

Open Operations → Reports → Browse all reports → Cull candidate list to get a short, ranked list of active female animals whose recorded production, reproduction, lactation number or treatment spending merits a closer look. This page supports a conversation with the farm team and vet. It does not record a cull decision, remove an animal or submit a registry movement. For decisions and their follow-up, use the separate Cull dashboard and Cull list.

The report’s four-factor score is different from the seven-component score on the Cull dashboard. The two lists can rank the same animal differently; do not compare their numbers as if they used one formula. The report has no date-range control: it calculates a fresh snapshot using the farm’s current local date and the records available when requested.

Set the list size and use the downloads

Show top N offers Top 10, Top 25 (default), Top 50 and Top 100. The server limits this request to 5–100 rows. Changing Top N reloads the preview and changes the PDF/XLSX request. The number above the table is the number of ranked rows returned, capped by Top N; it is not the count of every animal that could be eligible. If no animal receives any score, the page says No eligible cows currently have a culling risk factor.

Download PDF and Download XLSX create the ranking in those formats for the selected Top N. The buttons show a generating state while a file is requested and a success or failure message afterward. They are unavailable in the read-only support view. Check the selected farm before sharing a download: the file contains animal identity, production, breeding and cost information. A preview failure does not necessarily mean file generation will fail; the page keeps the download buttons available.

Read and search the preview

The preview shows up to 25 rows per page, with a search box labelled Search animal, reason… and table controls for browsing/sorting the returned Top N. This search narrows the already returned list; it does not ask the server to search every animal on the farm. Select the animal identity to open its record. The columns are:

Column	Meaning
Animal	Tag, available name and national ID. Use the link to check the source record.
Lact #	Recorded lactation number used for the lactation part of this score.
Avg kg	Mean daily milk yield from eligible complete recording days in the last approximately 60 farm-local days. A dash means no usable yield average.
Svc / cycle	Services since the last recorded calving, or all available services if no calving is recorded. Despite the label, the current calculation does not use the animal’s breeding-cycle record, so an earlier conception followed by pregnancy loss does not reset this count. A dash means no recorded service count.
Days open	Days since last calving for an open cow. A confirmed-pregnant cow can show a frozen calving-to-implied-conception interval, but pregnancy prevents a reproduction-risk score. A dash means the dates cannot be derived.
Trt YTD	Sum of non-cancelled treatment costs from 1 January through the farm-local date used for this report. It is recorded treatment spending, not all care costs.
Score	Composite points from the four factors below, capped at 100. Colour strengthens from amber to orange at 70 and red at 80; it is a review priority, not a medical diagnosis or automatic cull instruction.
Top reason	The highest-scoring contributing factor. Other factors may also contribute to the same total.

The server considers active female animals with a qualifying Lactating, Dry, Heifer or Cow stage; it also has a fallback for an animal with historical lactation data but no current stage row. It discards score-zero animals, sorts remaining animals by descending score and then tag, and returns only Top N. A missing or partial milk-recording day is not automatically treated as poor yield: only days with at least the farm’s configured number of distinct milking sessions enter the yield comparison. This means missing evidence can lower a score or keep an animal off the list. Review record completeness before comparing animals.

Understand the four scoring factors

Factor	Points and current rule
Yield	Up to 50 for a currently lactating animal. A mean yield at or below the bottom-quartile threshold of lactating animals with eligible yield data gets 50; below the median gets 25; otherwise 0. The comparison thresholds come from this farm’s animals with usable recorded yield.
Reproduction	Up to 30, only when the animal is not currently confirmed pregnant. At least four services since last calving or at least 200 days open gives 30. Three services gives 18; at least 120 days open gives 15. The handler takes the first matching condition rather than adding them.
Lactation	Up to 15. Lactation 5 gives 10, lactation 6 or higher gives 15; lower numbers give 0.
Treatment cost	5 when year-to-date recorded treatment cost is at or above a positive threshold calculated from eligible animals; otherwise 0. The current top-decile calculation includes zero-cost animals. If its selected threshold is zero, no animal receives these points, even when a small number of animals have treatment spend.

The displayed Top reason is the factor contributing the most points, not an independently verified cause for culling. Equal contribution is resolved in the factor order shown above. Scores are a heuristic: they omit circumstances and costs not in these inputs. Discuss a candidate with the responsible farm professional and inspect the animal before recording a decision. For an actual exit, follow the departure workflow after the decision; no action on this report completes that step.
