Record abortion or pregnancy loss

What this form helps you do

Use Record Abortion to record that an animal has lost a pregnancy which Farmlync currently shows as confirmed. The action preserves the date, optional gestation stage, suspected cause and notes, then returns the animal to the Open breeding state.

This is not the form for an initial negative pregnancy diagnosis. Use Record pregnancy check when the examination result is the first evidence that an animal is not pregnant. Use this form when a previously confirmed pregnancy has been lost.

Where to open it

Open the animal’s detail page and use Record an event → Record loss. Farmlync supplies the animal; this form does not let you change it. The action is shown only when the current server-calculated animal capabilities permit it.

An Owner, Manager or Vet with permission to record breeding events can save pregnancy loss. It is a single-animal action because the date, gestation and evidence must be reviewed for each animal.

What saving changes

Recording pregnancy loss has several linked effects:

creates the pregnancy-loss event and adds it to the animal’s breeding timeline;
changes the animal’s current pregnancy status from Confirmed to Open;
links the most recent eligible conceived service on or before the loss date when one exists, and marks that service as Early loss;
cancels pending pregnancy-diagnosis and other superseded breeding actions, while leaving an unrelated fertility re-examination intact;
creates a heat-detection watch anchored to the loss date; and
refreshes breeding lists, forecasts, analytics, alerts and animal summaries.

Review the animal and date carefully before saving. This action changes current breeding decisions; it does not merely add a note.

Eligibility checked when you save

The animal must:

exist on the selected farm;
be Female and Active;
be enrolled in the Breeding Program; and
have a Confirmed current pregnancy.

If any condition is no longer true, Farmlync rejects the record even if the form was already open.

Fields

Gestation (days)	No	Whole number from 0 to 300 representing the estimated gestation stage at loss. Leave blank when it is not known; do not invent a value.
Suspected cause	No	Not specified, Infectious, Nutritional, Trauma / injury, Twinning, Congenital / genetic, Unknown or Other. This is a suspected category, not a veterinary diagnosis.
Notes	No	Observations or veterinary findings, up to 1,000 characters. Include the evidence needed to understand the entry without putting a suspected cause forward as confirmed.

The form displays an amber warning that the pregnancy will be cleared. Cancel closes the form without saving. Record abortion submits the event once.

Record and verify

Confirm the animal identity shown in the panel title.
Confirm that a pregnancy was previously recorded as confirmed.
Enter the actual loss date and any known gestation, suspected cause and notes.
Select Record abortion once and wait for Abortion recorded — pregnancy cleared.
Reopen the animal and confirm that its pregnancy status is Open.
Check the breeding timeline for the pregnancy-loss event and the relevant service for Early loss when a source service was available.
Check Today’s Work or the breeding work list for the new heat-detection watch.

Farmlync permits only one pregnancy-loss event for the animal on the same farm-local day. If an event already exists, verify that record rather than submitting another copy. The current portal does not provide an edit or delete action for a saved pregnancy-loss event, so confirm the animal, date and evidence before saving.

Common problems

Message or symptom	What to check
Pregnancy loss requires a confirmed current pregnancy	Review the latest pregnancy check and current breeding state. Use the pregnancy-check form if this is a new negative diagnosis.
Animal is not in the Breeding Program	Enrol the animal only when it genuinely belongs in the programme, then record the confirmed loss.
Pregnancy loss can only be recorded for female animals	Confirm that the correct animal was opened. Correct identity data only when it is genuinely wrong.
Animal is not active	Review lifecycle or departure history. Do not add new breeding events to an inactive animal.
Pregnancy loss already exists for that day	Open the animal’s breeding history and verify the existing event.
The expected service is not marked Early loss	Check that the loss date is on or after the service date and review the breeding history. Farmlync saves the loss even when it cannot find a matching conceived service to link.
