What this page helps you do

Open Operations → Reports → Browse all reports → Herd wastage to understand which animals left the selected farm and why. This is a backward-looking exit report. Use Cull review to plan possible future removals; appearing there is not an exit and does not enter this report. The report reads animal exits already recorded on the farm; it does not record, approve or submit an exit.

Choose the reporting window

From and To are farm-local calendar dates. The page initially selects approximately the previous 12 months through today. Both dates are included: an exit at any time on the To day belongs in the result. Choose the period you want to compare before interpreting a count or rate. If To precedes From, the page shows “To” must be on or after “From” and does not request a new report. The server also rejects a window longer than five years, although the page does not check that maximum before sending the request; a longer selection appears as the generic load error. The report may show a loading skeleton while the dates change and an error message if it cannot load; neither state means there were no exits.

The result includes non-deleted animals in this farm with an Exit date in the chosen period. It is not restricted to animals currently marked Active or to one species. If there are none, the page says No exits in this window. Widen the dates or check the animal’s recorded exit if an expected animal is absent.

Read the four summary cards

Card	Meaning
Total exits	Count of recorded animal exits in the chosen period. Its smaller active now number is the farm’s current active-animal count, not the herd size at the start of the period.
Cull rate (annualised)	(Culled + Died) ÷ active now × 365 ÷ days in the selected window × 100. The smaller text shows the separate Culled and Died counts. Despite the card’s name, deaths are included.
Mortality rate (annualised)	Died ÷ active now × 365 ÷ days in the selected window × 100. The smaller text gives the Died count.
Avg age at exit	Intended to summarize exited animals with a usable birth date, shown in months and approximately in years. Current limitation: the server first calculates an average per reason, then weights it by every exit in that reason, including rows without a usable birth date. The overall figure can therefore be biased toward reasons with missing birth dates. A dash means no reason produced a usable age.

For these cards, Sold is an exit reason of Sold; Culled includes Culled and Slaughtered; Died includes Deceased, Died and Lost. Any other or missing reason is Other. The age calculation uses the elapsed time between birth and exit divided by 30.44 days per month, rounded to one decimal month. The report’s age is therefore approximate, not a calendar-month anniversary.

An annualised percentage scales a selected period to 365 days. It can swing sharply for a short window with few exits. The denominator is the herd active when you open the report, even for a past period; it is not a historical average or a count of animals at risk during that period. A dash replaces a rate when the current active count is zero. For a steadier comparison, use a full-year window and read the underlying counts alongside the percentages. Do not compare this rate with a differently defined industry benchmark without checking its denominator.

Read the monthly chart and reason table

Exits by month is a stacked bar chart. The horizontal axis is the farm-local month and the vertical axis is the number of exits. Each bar divides exits into Sold, Culled, Died and Other using the classifications above. The legend identifies the colours; hover over a bar for its values. A small number inside a segment is that segment’s count, not its percentage. Months without an exit are not added as empty bars. If the selected window cuts through a month, that bar includes only exits inside the selected dates.

By reason keeps the recorded exit reason rather than the chart’s four broad buckets. Its columns are:

Column	Meaning
Reason	The saved reason on the animal exit. A missing reason is shown as Unknown. Several reasons can belong to the same chart bucket.
Count	Animals that left for that reason inside the selected window.
% of exits	This reason’s count divided by Total exits, rounded to a whole percentage. Rounded row percentages may not add to exactly 100%.
Avg age at exit	Approximate mean age in months for that reason where a birth date is available; a dash means unavailable.

Rows are ordered by descending count. Select a reason row to open an animal list for that reason. The panel shows each animal’s tag and available name, national ID, breed, current stage and lactation number, and links to the animal page for the actual exit record. Now on a stage label is the operational stage read for the panel; it is not necessarily the stage when the animal exited. The initial report currently loads the IDs and identity cards for all matching exits so every reason can open immediately; on a very large result, narrow the dates before opening the page. Close the panel to continue reading the report. The report has no CSV or PDF export control on this page.

If the reason is wrong, correct it through the authorised animal departure workflow and reopen the report. Do not infer the legal disposal state from the Wastage chart; use the Fallen Stock Register for collection and certificate evidence.
