Animals and identification

Why use this guide

The Animals area keeps the farm’s animal register and identity history together. Use it to find or register an animal, maintain its profile and follow it through grouping, transfer or departure.

Every milk, breeding, health or movement record belongs to an animal. Check the selected farm and the animal’s tag before saving a record.

Register an animal

Section titled “Register an animal”

Open Farm → Animals → Animals list and choose Register animal. The form has two steps:

  1. Identity & Birth: enter the tag number, breed, sex and date of birth. A name, birth weight, colour and horn details may be added when known. The tag identifies the animal within this farm.
  2. Farm Entry & Parentage: select how and when it entered the farm. Add source or purchase information as applicable. Record identifiers such as RFID, national ID or registration number, and dam/sire, group, pen and notes if known. A farm may require a national identifier.

Continue between steps, check the entered details, then submit. Find the new tag in Animals list and open it to verify the identity. If Farmlync reports a duplicate tag or identifier, find the existing animal before trying a different value; creating a second animal for the same physical animal can split its records.

Find and filter animals

The Animals list has a search box for tag, name or identifier. Use the filter panel for status, breeding state, groups and other criteria, then choose Apply filters. Clear all filters returns to the ordinary list. A filter can be saved under a name and later chosen again; a default filter can affect the first view you see. Export page downloads only the current page; use Reports → Animal Register for the complete filtered export. The Animals list screen guide explains every filter and batch action.

The Tag pool manages unused tags and displays the assigned count. Groups, Watch list, Cull list, Departures and Herd notes provide focused views of the same farm’s animals; they do not create separate herds.

Use the animal detail

Select a row to open a quick-view drawer, then choose Open full animal page for its complete record. Its header shows identity, stage and important status such as withdrawal. The page has sections for Lifecycle, Breeding, Health, Milk and other relevant history, depending on the animal and farm type. Use the action controls on this page to record work without searching for the animal again. Verify the tag in the header first. Use Edit to correct ordinary animal details. Add to group or Manage updates group membership. The watch-list controls add a concern and later resolve it. Record cull decision records the decision; Record Exit is the separate action that records the actual departure. Transfer farm moves an animal between accessible farms with its appropriate movement record. Delete is a guarded administrative action, not the normal way to record a sale, death or cull. For those outcomes, use Record Exit.

An exited animal can still be found in history, but active recording actions may be unavailable. Recheck its exit before assuming the page is broken. Some record corrections require a specific role and may keep a history of the earlier version.

Import and bulk work

The Animals list has Import for new animals and Bulk update for existing animals. Their outcomes differ: an import can reject individual rows, while a failed bulk update changes none. Follow Import and bulk update animals for the CSV fields and results. The list also offers selection-based batch actions; filtered results are not automatically the same as your selected rows.
