Weaning — single and batch recording

Weaning records the transition of a calf away from milk feeding. Use the single or batch flow to date the event accurately and capture any measured weight or housing change that actually occurred.

Weaning ends an animal’s Calf stage and starts its next lifecycle stage. It is more than a note or the dismissal of an alert. Use the animal’s Weaning action for one calf; use the selection tray or compatible work action for batch Weaning.

Eligibility and date

• The animal must currently be in Calf stage.
• It must be at least 56 days old on the entered weaning date, measured in farm-local calendar days.
• The date cannot exceed farm today + 30 days. Although the application accepts a forward window, saving changes the current lifecycle state immediately. Use the actual event date for completed weaning, not this form to create a reminder.
• You need permission to manage lifecycle events. A chosen pen also needs permission to manage animals.

Farmlync determines the new stage. There is no stage dropdown on these forms. Check farm type and animal sex before saving.

Single-animal form

Control	Meaning and valid input
Animal shown by the opening action	This form acts on that animal; it has no second animal search. Close and reopen from the correct animal if needed.
Weaning Date	Required, default farm today. Date presets offer convenient choices. Interpreted in the farm timezone.
Weaning weight (kg)	Optional measured weight, 0.1–9,999.9 kg; the input steps by 0.1 kg. Blank means no weight recorded by this action. Do not use zero to mean “not weighed”.
Move to pen	Optional farm pen. Blank leaves current pen unchanged. Choose the actual destination; saving also moves the animal to this pen.
Notes	Optional, maximum 1,000 characters. The microphone can append dictated notes where supported.
Record Weaning	Saves the event, stage change and any supplied weight/pen change.
Cancel	Discards the unsaved form. Controls are locked while saving.

If your role cannot move an animal to a pen, leave Move to pen empty and ask an authorised colleague to handle housing. Retrying the same unauthorised pen choice will not help.

After saving

The toast says Weaning recorded successfully. Open the animal and check its new stage, timeline entry/date/notes, weight history if supplied, and current pen if moved. The obsolete Weaning eligible work item clears; unrelated alerts remain. This action does not register or sell an animal.

Batch form

Select the calves and open batch Weaning. Work/execution actions can lock the supplied roster; the general selection-tray form permits changes.

Control	Meaning and behaviour
Selection banner	Shows animals taken from the tray and skipped entries. A request accepts up to 500 animals; inspect any limit notice.
Weaning Date	One required date shared by all animals. Each animal’s age and stage are checked.
Notes	Shared optional text, maximum 1,000 characters, copied to successful records.
Add animal	Search when editing the roster is allowed. Already-selected animals are excluded.
Clear all	Clears the draft list; it does not delete saved weaning records.
Animal row	Verify tag/name/identifier. Every animal remaining in this list is submitted; this is not a checkbox table.
Weight (kg)	Optional individual weight. Enter a positive measured value, or leave blank if not weighed. There is no shared weight.
Remove	Removes an animal from the draft when roster editing is allowed.
Wean N Animals	Submits listed animals for individual validation and recording.

Batch Weaning has no destination-pen control. Use single Weaning to combine a pen move, or perform housing separately.

Batch weight input is less strict than the single form: only finite positive entries are included in the request. A zero, negative or nonnumeric value may be omitted rather than recorded. Although the input shows the same 0.1–9,999.9 kg range, the batch currently does not validate that range before submitting; an out-of-range value can make the request fail instead of becoming an item-level result. Check every weight before saving.

Partial success and retry

A calf below minimum age or no longer in Calf stage can fail while others succeed. The result panel shows success and each failure reason. Retry failed returns only failed animals to the draft with common settings. Correct the reason before retrying. Close acknowledges results to the opening work/selection screen.

If calves already left Calf stage, do not submit Weaning again. Check the animal timeline for a successful earlier attempt. An erroneous saved event needs its appropriate correction workflow; another batch is not an undo.

Worked example

You weaned three calves together. Enter the actual date, add all three and enter only measured weights. Save and inspect the result. If two succeeded and one was too young, retry only that failed animal after correcting a mistaken date/identity. The two successful animals must not be resubmitted.
